Our Big Question: What has shaped our world? (Transport)

Language, Literacy and Communication

This term we will be looking at 'Transport' themed fiction and non-fiction books to develop our oracy, reading and writing skills. All children will also participate in a guided reading session each week. Children will read their home-school reading books with an adult twice a week

When writing stories, we will use a 'Talk for writing' approach (learning stories fluently with actions).

We will practise our oracy skills through show and tell sessions once a week.

Pupils will receive differentiated phonic sessions four times a week and spelling sessions to support their language skills. We will also ensure that children develop the correct pencil grip and letter formation.


Humanities

Numeracy is taught in our topic lessons using skills we have learnt the previous week.

We will be looking at the history of transport and comparing the past to the present and what transport could look like in the future.

We will be looking at maps linked to public transport and different types of transport which is used around the world.

Religion, Values and Ethics

We will be looking at the importance of journeys. This will be linked to Bible stories where important journeys have taken place; to important pilgrimages in different religions; and to the journey of growth within ourselves as we age.

Mathematical Development

Your child will work through the Active learn Maths scheme. They will experience a wide range of activities, which will enhance their knowledge and confidence.

This term, we will be looking at numbers, place value, position and direction, measurements, mental addition and subtraction, properties of shapes, multiplication, division and sorting.

We will also be using our maths skills for problem solving and reasoning activities.

Wellbeing

P.E will take place on Wednesdays this term. This could change at short notice therefore we ask that all P.E kits are sent into school at the beginning of the half-term and kept in school until the half-term holiday where they will be sent home to be washed. P.E kits are to include t-shirt, shorts, trainers and socks with jogging bottoms and a jumper for when the weather is colder.

P.E this half-term will be gymnastics followed by ball skills.

We will be looking at different discussion points linked to our topic, such as:

My happy mind- the importance of gratitude,

half termly workshops with PC Lindsay and circle time.

We will be using our outdoor learning environments as much as possible so please ensure your child has wellies in school.

Expressive Arts

We will be looking at Winter silhouettes paintings. Drawing houses for a Diversity Street.

Art for the Eisteddfod.

Georges Seurat - Pointillism.

Vehicle paintings.

In music we will be creating our own music, listening and singing Welsh songs, Easter songs and following Charanga (our music scheme).


Science and Technology

Reception: We will be looking at a range of transport related activities such as materials, the impact transport can have on the environment, how things move, floating/sinking and recycling.

Year 1 and 2: We will be looking at a range of transport related activities such as materials, the impact transport can have on the environment, how things move, floating/sinking and learning about distance.

Design & Technology

Reception: We will be planning, designing, making and evaluating a junk model vehicle.

Year 1 and 2: We will be planning, designing, making and evaluating a range of modes of transport. Using a variety of materials, we will test our products to learn which materials are best suited for each model made.

Digital Competency

Pupils will be logging onto Hwb and using write, paint, chart, branch, turtle and mix tools to develop their ICT skills. This will include saving their work and opening a saved file.

We will use search engines to find out information about our area.

In Dydd Gwener Gwych, we will be learning to use ICT to solve problems through the use of Minecraft Education.

Homework

Please read with your child at least three times a week at home and record this in their reading records.

Develop key maths skills such as: telling the time, reading scales and learning number facts such as number bonds.

'Topic show and tell' (see timetable below).

Our show or/and tell will be about our topic of 'Transport'.

All children in Reception, years 1 and 2 children are to bring in topic-related items only and no toys.

Show and tell can include bringing something in from home, presenting something using the interactive whiteboard or just talking about something. The other children will listen and ask relevant questions. (If your child misses their slot due to absence they will have the opportunity to show and tell the following week).
